Class has begun and this time, the subject is jewelry.

Join us for a special Thursday evening exploring the history, culture, value, and stories we carry through adornment.

Join LaMar Gayles (archaeologist, independent curator, material culture scholar, and decorative arts historian) for a fascinating of how what we wear can communicate who we are, where we come from, and the cultures we belong to.

Gayles will explore the history of adornment in the Caribbean and among communities of color across the Americas, examining how these histories continue to shape and influence
contemporary jewelry practices. The talk will also draw on archaeological concepts and material culture studies to consider how objects of adornment can reveal histories of identity, culture, craftsmanship, and community.

LaMar Gayles, PhD (a native son of the South Side of Chicago) is an archaeologist,
independent curator, material culture scholar, and technical art historian. His research
methodology combines archaeometry, arts-based research, conservation science, art historical analysis, ethnography, historical reproduction, and technical studies to explore material and visual culture. View his Instagram @lgaylesjr.
